Locally Produced Food

University of Hawaii at Hilo is the only campus in a 10-campus University of Hawaii system that serves 65% locally produced food. Featured in UH Hilo Stories – an online publication of the Office of the Chancellor, UH Hilo Dining Services, provided by Sodexo, is at the forefront of producing delicous local food on a University Campus in Hawaii. The ‘Local First’ program was started in 2006 by General Manager, Bridget Awong, but has since expanded and been ingrained in the culture of the university. Not only do they consistently serve 65% locally produced foods at the Dining areas, but every Wednesday, they create a menu that is 100% local.

Currently, UH Hilo’s Local First program not only uses vendors for fruits and vegetables, but for beef, fish, coffee, and more. They continue to work with over 42 vendors to accomplish such an amazing variety in their menu.

XOXO to Sodexo – For Taking a Stand for Millions of Hens

Today, with Sodexo, we are announcing that the giant food service company has committed, over the next five years, to switch all 20 million pounds of its liquid eggs to cage-free. The company manages dining operations at thousands of colleges, universities, hospitals, and corporate dining centers across the country. Due to its enormous size, this will remove 750,000 hens from battery cages per year and put them into cage-free settings. This announcement comes after prior announcements from the company to switch to cage-free for its 39 million shell eggs – which provides a better living for an additional 150,000 birds.
